20世紀のアメリカを代表する女性画家ジョージア・オキーフ。
本書は彼女のニューメキシコ州・アビキューの住まいを写した写真集です。作家の住まいやアトリエは、作品そのもとと同じくらいおもしろい、と思っているのは私だけはないはずです。かずある美術家のアトリエを撮影した素晴らしい写真集のなかでも、『オキーフの家』を挙げたいのは、やはり、前回紹介した『茶の本』にあります。
ニョーヨークに住んでいたオキーフは、42歳でこの地を訪れるや、ひとめで魅せられ、アビキューの北にあるゴーストランチで毎夏を過ごすようになりました。高名な写真家であり、画廊「291」を主宰する夫アルフレッド・スティーグリッツの逝去にともない、1949年、アビキューに移住、98歳で亡くなるまでの40年をこの地で過ごしました。
そしてオキーフが、生涯を通して愛読していたのが『茶の本』でした。彼女の最晩年を世話したクリスティン・テイラー・パッテンのエッセイに、そのことが綴られています。
「オキーフが中国と日本の美術を愛していたことはよく知られているが、彼女の人生において『茶の本 The Book of Tea』がどれほど重要だったかは、あまり知られていない。『茶の本 The Book of Tea』は、日本の茶道について、岡倉覚三（＝岡倉天心）が英文で著した小さな書物で、この本をいかに愛しているか、オキーフは私にくり返し語った。視力の弱くなった彼女のために、私はしょっちゅう、それを読まされたものだ」
本書に写された住まいの写真を見ていると、たしかに『茶の本』の言葉が脳裏をよぎります。『オキーフの家』を通して『茶の本』を解釈できるかもしれません。また、あらためてオキーフの画集を開きたくもなります。この本には齢90代のジョージア・オキーフのポートレイトも掲載されています。そしてそれは、年を重ねることの美しさを、私たちにまぎれもなく伝えてくれます。
『茶の本』を実践した人間の表情といってよいのではないでしょうか

Female painter Georgia O'Keeffe represents 20th century America.
This book is a collection of photos of her homes in Abiquiu, New Mexico. I don't think I'm the only one who finds artist’s homes and ateliers interesting like their works themselves. What I want to provide is “Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses: Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu” from among the many wonderful photo collections of the artist's ateliers as I introduced “The Book of Tea” last time, which relates to her.
As soon as O'Keeffe, who resided in New York, visited this area at 42, she fell under its spell and spent every summer at Ghost Ranch in northern Abiquiu. With her husband, famed gallery 291 owner, Alfred Stieglitz's death, she moved to Abiquiu in 1949, where she spent the next 40 years of her life until she passed away at 98.
O'Keeffe read “The Book of Tea” keenly throughout her life. Christine Taylor Patten, who took care of her through the final days of her life, wrote in her essay:
“Everyone knows that O'Keeffe loved Chinese and Japanese arts, but no one knows how important “Cha No Hon, The Book of Tea” was in her life. “Cha No Hon, The Book of Tea” is a small book written in English by Kakuzo Okakura (Tenshin Okakura) about the Japanese tea ceremony. O'Keeffe repeatedly told me how she loved this book. I was often asked to read it to her because of her failing eyesight.”
When you look at the photographs of her homes in the book, the words from “The Book of Tea” surely run through the back of your mind. You could even interpret “The Book of Tea” through “Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses: Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu”. You'll also want to open a book of her artistic collections once more.
There's also a portrait of 90-year-old Georgia O'Keeffe in the book. It tells us without a doubt of her aged beauty.
We could call this the face of a human who practiced “The Book of Tea”.
