『MISS』『家庭画報』『VOGUE NIPPON』『Harper’s BAZAAR日本版』と、いつの時代も女性の興味を惹きつけてやまない媒体の変遷とともに、エディターとしての鋭い感覚と腕に磨きをかけてきた愛甲悦子さん。結婚を機にドイツ・ケルンに移り住み、不夜城の東京エディター生活から一変して「麗しのスローライフ」へ。子育てをしながらエディターとしても活躍を続ける愛甲さんのライフスタイルについて伺いました。

ファッションへの目覚めとジャーナリストへの憧憬

ファッションエディターとして華々しい経歴をおもちの愛甲悦子さん（以下、愛甲さん）。今日に至るまでにはどのような道のりを歩んできたのだろう。幼い頃はとても活発で、木登りはお手のもの。家の屋根の上にも登ったりして、友だちと外を駆け回っていたそうだ。一方で本とおしゃれが大好きで、ご自身で絵本や物語を書いたり、おもちゃのキャンディ・キャンディのミシンで洋服づくりにいそしんでみたり。建築家のおじいさまをのぞき、おばあさまやご両親が教師というご家庭に育ち、ご多分にもれず愛甲さんご自身も将来は教師になるものと期待されていたが、1 0 歳の頃「毎日同じところで働きたくない！ 毎日違う人に会えるジャーナリストになりたい」と自我が開花。大学在学中にはアメリカ現代文学を専攻していたが、ご本人は英語が完璧とは思えなかったようで「ジャーナリストは無理そうだけど、同じく名刺ひとつで会いたい人に会える、好きなファッション誌のエディターを目指そう」と思い直し、大学卒業後に世界文化社に入社する。同社では『M i s s 家庭画報（ 1 9 9 9 年よりM I S S ） 』『家庭画報』を経て編集の機微を学ぶ。その後、念願のモード誌『VOGUE NIPPON（現VOGUE JAPAN）』へ転職。就職氷河期に出版業界に入り、VOGUEへは友人スタイリストに勧められ朝日新聞の公募で入社という類希なる強運の持ち主。夢を実現できたのは、心の中でずっと想い描いていればどうにかなるというヴィジョンの強さと、宝くじ当選並みの運の良さ、そして持ち前のポジティブさだと、愛甲さんは語る。 そののちに『Harper’s BAZAAR日本版』へ転職して3年後、同誌の副編集長のポストにお声がかかる。当時はすでにドイツへ引っ越すことが決まっていたので、1年限定でよければと引き受けることに。撮影や取材後に夜を徹して原稿を仕上げ、朝方短い眠りにつく…という13年間の「不夜城、東京エディター生活」に華やかな幕引きをし、結婚を機にドイツ・ケルンへ拠点を移す。 ドイツ人のご主人とは東京で出会った。偶然にも同じような本を読んで育ち、大人になったいまも読んでいる本や好きな本が同じだったことからすっかり意気投合。当時ご主人はモバイル事業のコンサルティングを行う日本企業に勤務されていたが、次にステップアップするにはヨーロッパに戻ったほうがいいと考え、ドイツに帰国することを決意した。同時に愛甲さんご自身も、ひと通りやりたい雑誌にも関わることができたし、家族をもちたいという気持ちと、母になる経験をしておきたいという想いが重なり、「できれば35歳までに妊娠したい」とご主人に意思表明。年齢はわすかに過ぎたもののその想いが叶って、現在は1歳8か月のご子息と、9歳のディーバなチワワちゃんと4人での生活。また、ひとりの働く女性としてもご自身の表現をしていきたいと考え、フリーランスのファッションエディターとしてキャリアを続け、ジュエリーや時計なども含めたファッションを一手に扱い、ご活躍中。いまの愛甲さんがあるのは、「空想力」「創造力」「実行力」があってこそと言えるのではないだろうか。 そのスマートかつパワフルなまでの原動力はどこからくるのだろう。幼い頃からひとり部屋に閉じこもってはおとぎ話を読み耽り、窓に絵を描いたりして、止めどない「空想力」を持ち合わせていたご様子。3歳の頃にはすでに兄君に「お兄ちゃんは女に生まれなくてかわいそうね！」と、女性として生を受けたことを自慢していたそうなので、長年培われてきた「女性を謳歌するパワー」も原動力と言えるのかもしれないが、総じて「好奇心」と「尽きないイマジネーション」による賜物と言ってもいい。もちろん、最愛のご子息の笑顔と笑い声も生きるエネルギーとなっている。

ファッションエディターとしての変わらぬ想い

ファッションエディターという職業は、常に時代の最先端でマーケットをリードし、流行をつくっていく役割を担っているが、愛甲さんの中で変わらないものはあるのだろうか？ 「ファッションは空気のように軽く、移り気なイキモノですが、同時に極めてパーソナルなもの。毎シーズン、新たなトレンドやスタイルアイコンが現れ、時代と気分によってモードは変容していきますが、どの時代にあっても、その空気に敏感に反応しながら独自のスタイルを貫く女性たちがいます。私にとってファッションとは、自分の生き方や考え方のすべてを表現する、ごくパーソナルで普遍的なもの。かく言う私も、ファッションオタクでもなければファッションヴィクティムでもありません。トレンドは追わない主義ですし、ヴィンテージ×ハイファッションが基本のマイスタイル。純粋に美しいと思うものを最大限に美しくヴィジュアル化し、驚きや優しさで誌面を目にする人の心を動かせたら。そして女性が女性であるために装う歓びをいつも持ち合わせていたい、ひいてはページを目にする女性たちにも装う歓びを感じて欲しい、というのが、ファッションエディターとして変わらぬ願いです」 と、ご自身のファッション観も交えて語ってくれた。 職業柄、たくさんの素敵な方々に会う機会に恵まれた愛甲さんにとって最も影響力のあった方を伺ってみた。日本国内ならば生きるレジェンド、美輪明宏さん。遡って『VOGUE』編集部時代、ファッション・フィーチャー・エディターとして活躍していた愛甲さんは「女優という生き方」特集の担当になり、美輪さんをインタビューする機会に恵まれた。そして開口一番、美輪さんに言われたのが「お嬢さん、身の丈に合ったものを選びなさいね」だったそうだ。「服も男も女友達も、全部があなた自身を写す鏡よ。人間はカメレオンと同じ変温動物。あなたが着る服、住む場所、読む本、聴く音楽、一緒に過ごす人々、生活を取り巻くあらゆる環境があなたを構成しているわ。身の丈を大事になさい」と、美輪さんからの人生レッスン。その日の愛甲さんは普段と変わりなくヴィンテージドレスにファーをまとっていたそうだが、30代前半だった当時は分不相応だったのかしら？とか、つきあっている男性のせいかしら？……などと、少々悩んだのだそう。しかしその美輪さんからいただいたアドバイスがいつも頭の片隅にあったお陰で、華やかなファッション業界の中にあって自分を見失わずにいられたし、ファンタジーを持ちつつも地に足の着いたご主人に巡り会えたのかもしれないと、ご自身で振り返る。 海外から選ぶならば、愛甲さんが敬愛してやまないという、US版『VOGUE』の名物ファッションエディター／クリエイティブディレクターのGRACE CODDINGTON（グレイス・コディントン）。同誌編集長、ANNA WINTOUR（アナ・ウィンター）の右腕として活躍し、映画『ファッションが教えてくれること』でも、その研ぎ澄まされたクリエイティビティと豊かな表現力に加え、スタッフから集める厚い信頼で、異彩を放っている。グレイスが3 0 年に及ぶ『VOGUE』での自身の仕事を集成した作品集『GRACE : Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue』を2002年に出版した際、『VOGUE』主催の来日イベントで彼女に初めて会うことができた。 「仕事には一切妥協をせず、誰に対してもフェアであり、いたって自然体、70歳を過ぎたいまでも生涯現役。ファッションに夢を与え続ける伝説のファッションエディターのスピリットに、私は多分一生、影響を受け続けるのだと思います」と語る愛甲さん。『ファッションが教えてくれること』にも出てくるグレイスのフィロソフィを教えていただいた。グレイスが編集者としてまだ駆け出しの頃、イギリス出身の著名なファッションフォトグラファー、Norman Perkinson（ノーマン・パーキンソン）と仕事をした際に、彼から言われた言葉─ 「Always keep your eyes open, Never go to sleep in the car or anything like that. Keep watching because whatever you see at the window or whatever it can inspire you」 （いつも目を開けておきなさい。車や電車などの移動の時にも絶対に眠りに落ちたりしないように。なぜなら目に映るあらゆるものがインスピレーションを与えてくれるはずだから）。 これは、いまでも愛甲さんが信条とし、実践している大切な言葉である。 刺激に満ちた毎日を送ってきたであろう愛甲さんが、ファッションエディターとして最も大切にしていることはなんだろう。「自分の美意識のチャンネルがぴたりと合う、好き！と思えるコト・モノ・ヒトの引き出しを、いつもいっぱいにしておくことです。たとえば、雑誌や写真集、映画などから気に入ったビジュアルがあればカラーコピーやスキャンをし、主にPCの中にストックしておきます。または子ども用の絵本から仕掛けが凝ったものや面白いアイディアがあったら、それをファッションページに置き換えてつくってみたり、水族館に行ってクラゲを見た時にはクラゲとジュエリーを組み合わせたらステキだな、とか。また、John Irving（ジョン・アーヴィング）やGabriel Garcia=Marquez（ガブリエル・ガルシア＝マルケス）ら海外作家が書いた、非現実的な空想の世界にトリップできる小説が大好きで、その中のワンシーンを脳裏に焼きつけておいてアイディアのリソースにしたりもします」 日頃から人間観察が大好きで、風景にもアンテナを張り巡らせている。心のゆとりがある時には必ず月を探すようにしているそうで、一日の終わりに月が見られた日には、自分自身を見つめ直すようにしているそうだ。 そんな愛甲さんが、仕事の中で最もワクワクしたり楽しいと思う瞬間は、撮影前に自分の頭の中でイメージしていたヴィジュアルが形になっていくとき。フォトグラファー、スタイリスト、ヘアやメイクアップアーティスト、マニキュアリストなど、信頼するクリエイターの才能が組み合わさることで、想像を超える美しいストーリーが生まれる瞬間だ。1＋1＝2ではなく、無限大の可能性が広がる瞬間に立ち会えることは、最高にエキサイティングに違いない。「自分が心動かされるものを力の限り美しくヴィジュアル化し、誌面を目にする人の心を再び動かす、驚きや夢や優しさといったエモーショナルな何かを提供できること」。その表現手法には写真やイラストだけでなく、言葉やタイポグラフィーも含まれる。今後はその手段が映像という形になることもあるかもしれないし、その興味の扉は常に開けておきたいと思うほうだ。まさに天職とも言えるファッションエディターという職業は、愛甲さんの「生き方の一部」であるとも言い換えられる。

麗しのスローライフ、そしてこれから

日本からドイツに移住して、ご自身の仕事とご家族を上手に両立させている愛甲さん。生活はどのように変わったのだろうか？ 「太陽とともに起床し、きちんと食事をつくって食べる。ほどほどに仕事をし、家族とともに時間を過ごし、睡眠もきっちりとる。実に人間らしい生活が送れるようになりました笑）。ただし繁忙期には夕食後に仕事を再開することもあるので、家に仕事を持ち込まない主義である夫から不評を買うこともしばしば。また、ドイツはモードな街ではないので、仕事でもプライベートでも、残念ながら刺激は少ないのですが、自然と家族時間、旅する時間はたっぷりとあるので、心と身体がとても健康になりました。大変なのは、間違いなくドイツ語。結婚していても永久ビザ取得のために600時間のドイツ語クラスとドイツ社会や歴史にまつわる講義を受講、さらに試験をパスせねばならず、ドイツでの最初の半年は語学学校で浪人生のような日々を送りました。いまだに、ドイツ人ですみませんとよく夫に謝られています（笑）。夫は日本語が堪能で、行間も読めるし、日本の空間的美学や侘び寂びを愛している。ドイツに帰ってからも日本語力を維持したいと言う彼の気持ちに甘えて、自宅での会話は日本語と英語なので、ドイツ語がなかなか伸びません（笑）」 このように渡独してご子息が誕生してからの働き方は大きく変わり、基本的にはファミリー・ファースト。ご家族を最優先にマイペースに仕事を続けているそうだ。取材や撮影で、パリ、ロンドン、バーゼルなどへ出張の場合には、夫と義理の両親、ときに義理の叔父叔母まで総動員の育児ヘルプで乗り切っているそう。「家族のサポートなくして、いまの自分は存在せず」と、育児休暇を3ヶ月取得し、いまも育児をシェアしてくれるご主人と、出産後6週目から職場復帰した義母の後ろ盾に、感謝する日々だ。そして、世界のどこにいても「自分らしくあること」を心がけている。 現在は、ある名門ジュエラーのカタログ1冊を手掛けているという愛甲さん。3年ぶりに東京でのシューティングを控えている。現在は日本のクライアントが中心だが、今後はヨーロッパのクライアントを開拓しようと一念発起。営業活動用にウェブでポートフォリオを制作中で、世界を舞台にヴィジュアルをつくるのが夢だそうだ。 最後に『THREE TREE JOURNAL』の読者にメッセージをいただいた。「THREEが提唱する “Natural” “Honest” “Creative” のブランドコンセプトは、私自身にとっても共感すべき人生哲学です。THREEのプロダクツとともに、無理せず自然体で、ポジティブ＆ハッピーに生きる女性たちにエールを送ります。もしも、さらなるクリエイティビティが必要ならば、前述のグレイスのフィロソフィ“いつも目を開けておきなさい。車や電車などの移動の時にも絶対に眠りに落ちたりしないように。なぜなら目に映るあらゆるものがインスピレーションを与えてくれるはずだから”を想い出してください。人生のインスピレーションソースは、日常のそこかしこにあるのですから」 Chair（右） リビングとキッチン用に計6脚を大人買いした、大好きなイームズのシェルチェア。ベージュ×カーキ系の珍しいツイードファブリックが張られたシェルチェアは、1970年代にドイツメッセで使用されたヴィンテージ。 愛甲悦子さんの連載コラム ＞ Journals from the World「麗しのスローライフ」 Etsuko Aiko has refined her skills and keen senses as an editor with the changes in media that attract the interest of women of all ages, with MISS, Kateigaho, VOGUE NIPPON, Harper's BAZAAR Japan. She moved to Cologne, Germany after getting married, where her life drastically changed from a sleepless Tokyo editor to “the slow, refreshing life”. We asked Mrs. Aiko about her lifestyle, working as an editor while raising children.

Her awakening to fashion and her dream to be a journalist

Mrs. Etsuko Aiko (below, Mrs. Aiko) has a glamorous background as an editor. What journey did she take to reach where she is today? She was a very energetic child who was an accomplished tree-climber. She would run around outside with her friends, climbing the roof of her house. She also loved books and dressing up. She wrote stories and drew picture books herself, and diligently made clothing with her toy “Candy Candy sewing machine”. With the exception of her grandfather who was an architect, she grew up in a household where her grandmother and parents were teachers. Like many other people, she was expected to become a teacher in the future, but when she was 10-years-old, her ego blossomed and she decided, “I don't want to work at the same place every day! I want to become a journalist to be able to meet different people every day.” She majored in Contemporary American Literature while in college, but her English was not perfect so, as becoming a journalist seemed impossible, she changed her mind, aiming at becoming an editor at her favorite fashion magazine, where she could also meet the people she wanted to meet with a business card. After graduating college, she joined Sekai Bunka Publishing Inc. There she learned the subtleties of editing through “Kateigaho” and “Miss Kateigaho” (MISS as of 1999). Thereafter she changed jobs to her long-sought-after dream fashion magazine “VOGUE NIPPON” (Now, VOGUE JAPAN). She is the proprietress of an incredible destiny, having joined VOGUE through an advertisement in the Asahi Newspaper after having it suggested to her by a stylist friend. Mrs. Aiko says that she was able to realize her dream because of the strength of her vision to make it happen some how by always picturing it in her mind, her lottery-level good luck, and her natural positivity. Thereafter she changed jobs to “Harper's BAZAAR Japan”and three years later was called the post of assistant editor-in-chief at the same magazine. She had already decided to move to Germany at that time and so she accepted the post for only one year. She moved her hub to Cologne, Germany with her marriage, drawing a brilliant curtain over her 13 year “life as a sleepless Tokyo editor”, sitting up late at night after interviews and photographing to complete her draft and then getting light sleep at dawn. She met her husband in Tokyo. They completely hit it off as by chance they read similar books growing up, and even now as adults they read and like the same books. Her husband worked for a Japanese mobile consulting firm, but he felt that in order to move up he would have to return to Europe, so he decided to move back to Germany. At the same time, Mrs. Aiko had been able to work at the magazine she wanted to, feelings of wanting a family and the desire to experience motherhood grew equally strong in her, and she declared her intention to get pregnant by 35 to her husband. Her wish came true, although a bit beyond her desired age, and now she lives in a family of four with her 1 year and 8 month old son and her 9-year-old diva chihuahua. She decided she wanted to continue to express herself as a working woman, continuing her career as a freelance fashion editor. She is active as a sole dealer of fashion, including watches and jewelry. Mrs. Aiko is where she is now because of her imagination, creativity, and energy. Where does her smart and even powerful drive come from? Since she was a child, she would close herself up in her room, absorbed in fairy tales and drawing on her window. She possessed an unsurpassed imagination. When she was 3-years-old, she was proud to come into the world as a female, pitying her older brother for not having been born a girl. Her “power to enjoy being a female”spanning over many years could also be her drive. Generally speaking, it is her gift of “curiosity” and “endless imagination.” Of course, her most beloved son's smile and laughter are also her energy to live.

Her unchanging desire as a fashion editor

The job of a fashion editor is to always lead the market with the cutting edge and to create trends, but is there some unchanging thing in Mrs. Aiko? She told us her personal view on fashion. “Fashion is a changeable living thing, light like the air, and yet it is also an extremely personal thing. Every season, a brand new trend and fashion icon appears, and fashions change and improve with generations and feelings. In every generation there is a woman who sticks to her original style while being acutely sensitive to the air. Fashion for me is a very personal and universal thing that reflects everything about the way a person lives and thinks. But I am neither a fashion nerd nor a fashion victim. I am not the type to chase after trends. Vintage and high fashion are generally my style. My unchanging desire as a fashion editor is to show as beautifully as I can what I think is genuinely beautiful, and to move readers of the magazine pages with surprise or tenderness. Then I always want to be happy to wear clothes because I'm a woman, and by extension I want women who read the magazine to also feel the happiness of wearing clothing.” We spoke to the most influential person to Mrs. Aiko of all the people she's had the chance to meet in her profession. Living legend in Japan, Mr. Akihiro Miwa. Back in her days in the editing department at VOGUE when she was working as the fashion feature editor, Mrs. Aiko was put in charge of the special segment, “Living like an actress”and had the chance to interview Mr. Miwa. The first thing she was told by Mr. Miwa was, “Choose something that suits you.”She received the following life lesson from Mr. Miwa: “Clothing, men, female friends are all mirrors that reflect who you are. Humans are heterothermic like chameleon.  Every one of your surrounding environments, your lifestyle, the people who spend time with, the music you listen to, the books you read, the place you live, the clothes you wear constitute you. Cherish your station in life.”Mrs. Aiko was wearing fur and a vintage dress as usual that day, but she worried whether it was inappropriate for a woman in her early 30s, or if it was because of the man she was dating? However, she recounts, thanks to the advice that she received from Mr. Miwa that day always being in a corner of her mind, she was able to not lose sight of herself being in the glamorous fashion business, and may have been able to meet her husband with his fantasy yet realistic view. One overseas person she admires deeply is famous fashion editor and creative director of VOGUE US, Grace Coddington. She works as editor-in-chief Anna Wintour's right hand woman. Even in the movie “The September Issue”, she shines with her rich expressive power and well-honed creativity, gathering the deep trust of her staff. When in 2002 “GRACE: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue”, a collection of Grace's works at VOGUE spanning over 30 years, was published, Mrs. Aiko got to meet her for the first time at the Japan VOGUE event. Mrs. Aiko says, “She never compromises in her work. She is fair with everyone. She is very much herself, being lifelong active even now past 70. I think I will probably always continue to be influenced my entire life by her spirit as a legendary fashion editor who continues to give dreams to fashion.” She had Grace teach her her philosophy in “The September Issue.” When Grace was still budding as an editor, she was told the following by famous English fashion photographer, Norman Perkinson: “Always keep your eyes open, Never go to sleep in the car or anything like that. Keep watching because whatever you see at the window or whatever it can inspire you” These continue to be the valuable words that are Mrs. Aiko's philosophy that she puts into practice. Mrs. Aiko has lead a very inspirational life until now. What does she cherish most as a fashion editor? “I always fill up my drawer of people or things that I like, whose channel of aesthetic sense fits perfectly with mine. For example, if there is a visual from a magazine, photograph collection, or movie that I like, I color-copy or scan it, and stock it away on my PC mostly. Or if there is a pop-up from a children's picture book that I am obsessed with or an interesting idea, I try to reproduce it in the pages of fashion, like, when I see a jellyfish at the aquarium, I think, 'wouldn't it be cool to combine it with jewelry?' Or I love novels where I can trip to a surrealistic fantasy world written by foreign authors like John Irving or Gabriel Garcia Márquez, so I try to burn one scene from them into my memory and use it in my resource of ideas.” She says loves people watching on a regular basis, and has her antenna up for scenery. When she has some leeway, she always tries to search for the moon, and at the end of the day on days when she could see the moon, she re-evaluates herself. The moment that such a Mrs. Aiko enjoys and anticipates most in her work is when the visual that she had imagined in her mind before the shoot takes form. These are moments when a beautiful story that surpasses her imagination is born by combining the talents of her trusty creators, such as photographers, stylists, hair and make-up artists and manicurists. Witnessing the moments of infinite possibilities unravelling is not just 1 + 1 = 2, but rather must be extremely exciting. “Visualizing as beautifully as I can things that inspire me, and being able to provide something emotional like tenderness, dreams and surprise, that move the minds of readers once more. The means of expression is not only in photos and illustrations, but also in words and typography. It might be that these methods will later become an image, but I'm the type that wants to always have the door of interest open.” You could even say her job as a fashion editor, her dream job, is 'one part of her life.'

The relaxing slow life and what's next.

Mrs. Aiko has moved from Japan to Germany and has successfully continued to work while having a family. How has her life changed? “I get up with the sun and make and have meals. I work moderately and spend time with my family, and get plenty of sleep. I've actually become able to have a normal life (laughs). However, in busy seasons, I resume work after having dinner, so I often receive criticism from my husband who doesn’t-bring-work-home type.Germany is also not a town of fashion, so in both my work and private life, I unfortunately receive little inspiration. I have plenty of time to travel and spend with family and in nature, so I'm very healthy in mind and body. German is without a doubt the hardest part. Even though I was married, in order to obtain my permanent residency visa, I took 600 hours of German classes and German society and history classes and had to pass the exams. My first six months in Germany I spent as a lone-wolf in language school. My husband still often apologizes to me for being German (laughs). He is fluent in Japanese, can read between the lines and loves Japanese spatial aesthetics and wabi-sabi. In response to his desire to keep up his Japanese level after returning to Germany, we speak in English and Japanese at home, so my German does not improve (laughs). Her way of working changed drastically after moving to Germany and having her son. She is basically family first. Her family comes first and she continues her work at her own pace. When she goes on trips to Paris, London, or Basel for interviews or photographing, she gets through it with the full help with watching her child from her husband and her parents-in-law, or sometimes even her grandfather- and grandmother-in-law. “I wouldn't be where I am without the support of my family,” she says. She is thankful every day for the backup of her mother-in-law after her return to work 6-weeks after having her son and her husband who took a 3 month child-rearing break from work and continues to help in raising their son. Wherever she is in the world, she is careful “to be herself”. Mrs. Aiko says she is currently working on a catalogue for a noble family of jewelers. She is facing a shooting in Tokyo for the first time in 3 years. The majority of her clients are currently Japanese, but has her mind set on cultivating relations with European clients. She is currently making her portfolio on the web  for her business. Her dream is to make the world her stage for her visuals. Finally, we received a message for “THREE TREE JOURNAL” readers from her. “THREE's brand concept of “Natural””Honest””Creative”is a human philosophy that I myself can also identify with. It cheers on women who live positively and happily and are natural, while providing THREE products.
